WHERE ARE THEY GOING: PETROVA & TIKHONOV

Petrova and Tichonov are Becoming Professionals

Article by Anna Kozina in Russian language newspaper -
"Rossijskaja gazeta" on March 28, 2007.

TRANSLATION

On their return from the Worlds Championship in Japan, Russian figure skaters Maria Petrova and Alexey Tickhonov announced that they were leaving eligible skating.

It was known for a long time that the couple, which had skated together since 1988, was skating their last season as amateurs. The skaters wanted to leave the sport with dignity. They were able to reach that goal in Warsaw at the European Championship by winning the silver medals. But at the Worlds, they were not able even to complete their program. They left the competition after the short program, where they got only 11th place - not a great merit for champions of their ranking.

According to Marina Petrova, Alexey pulled a groin muscle and they were forced to withdraw from the competition and were rooting for their friends Yuka Kawaguchi and Alexey Smirnov from the stands as spectators . The newcomers were performing exceptionally well.

Throughout their eligible career, Petrova and Tikhonov achieved a lot. They have the honor of World Champions: "Bronze" in 2003; "Silver" in 2005 and "Gold" in 2000.

The are not leaving the sport empty handed.
