Romance and Mystery Novels

by Alina Adams

There are changes afoot!

After four years of "Where Are They Now... on Ice," the December 2007 publication of my fifth and final figure skating mystery, "Skate Crime," as well as the New York Times best-selling success of my soap opera tie-in novels, "Oakdale Confidential" and "Jonathan's Story," has prompted me to take this blog in -- as they love to say on daytime TV -- a different direction.

In addition to continuing the updates and exclusive interviews with former national and international skating champions (and there are still the archives; just type your favorite skater's name into the search box below), I am expanding to include irreverent commentary on soaps, primetime television, books, writing for a living, kids, husbands, friends and anything else that might cross my mind on a given day.

Thanks for visiting!

ALEXEI MISHIN AND MY BREASTS

This post may be slightly irregular, but...

On Friday, Evgeny Plushenko's coach, Alexei Mishin, was quoted as saying, "Russian women are not very good for figure skating. They are good for building rail tracks in Siberia, for example. They are just too strong and big."

Now, I am not touching that particular assertion with a ten foot pole (except maybe to wonder where the teeny, tiny, Pair skaters and gymnasts come from, then). But it did make me think of my previous dealings with Professor Mishin and how, in order for me to get biographical information about his skaters out of him for, he would tease me to lean over so he could get a better view of my cleavage.

Luckily, having been born in the former Soviet Union myself, I was sensible enough to interpret his requests not as sexual harassment, but as a compliment.

He got his peek, I got what I needed for my research. True cross-cultural cooperation. It's the Olympic ideal!

Goodness, for you--someone who sells herself as a politically liberal woman, I'm shocked that you would go to that extreme. Aren't liberals supposed to be self-proclaimed leaders of stopping sexual harassment even from well-meaning men? Your democrat sisters will not like reading this.

    Luckily, I only have a brother... (He's the ex-skater).

M--aren't self-proclaimed conservatives more concerned with shooting fellow quail hunters than reading about skating? Your republican sisters will not like reading this.
